The glitz and plastic celebrity package that surrounds the DJ image now is not how I want to be defined."Feed Me"
The problem with the scene is the over excess of people involved for the wrong reasons, The raise in interest and popularity of electronic music in such a short period of time and the mainstream media capitalizing from it, has destroyed and distorted the real definition of deejays/producers, the scene and electronic music itself.
There are too many so called djs/artists who popped out of NOWHERE'S and are now SUPERSTAR dj/producers but what is their story? Try looking up any information on a lot of the artists who came out in the last 4-5 years and took our "scene" by storm and try and find any information on their pasts events or life and guaranteed you won't find much! Why??? Because they are a product and creation of the mainstream music corporations and labels who only care about one thing and that's $$$.
So eventually something else will be cool, hip and profitable and they will leave our music/scene behind and 1/2 the world will support and claim to be whatever the mainstream media decides is the most profitable and most distracting at this time.
Then we will be able to pick up the pieces of an underground music scene that once had meaning until the media and technology had it's way with it, and turned it into a source of income and a way of getting instant gratification and fame.
EDM "Electronic Dance Music" derived in the late 2000's from the States as a gimmick to re-brand and market the Dance Music scene or "Rave" scene. Where for decades, history reveals a huge social intolerance, lack of support and was stigmatized.
Ever wonder how something so shunned and unaccepted for so many years was instantly transformed into this acceptable, glamorous and popular scene? No probably not because most people didn't even have any interest until the media/music industries decided to step in and glamorize/commercialize a scene that had been looked down upon and judged for so many years prior.
Now there are artists who have been around for 4-5 years at most who are dominating and performing as the world best dj/producers, playing all the huge shows and getting all the spotlight, but according to who makes them the best ??? Don't get me wrong, some of the top artists in the world who are in the spotlight actually really are the best in the world and are beyond talented. These artists/producers are pioneers and have dedicated their whole lives to what they do and love and it shows.
So when dj's like DJ Pauly D, David Guetta,Steve Aoki, Avicii ,Afrojack, Zedd, Diplo and so many more who are dominating, representing and are considered the "TOP ARTISTS/DEEJAYS" in the scene, WHO"S PROFESSIONAL OPINION IS THIS BASED ON? This is also measured by the numbers of likes and followers on social media websites and networks and then calculated and put on a list. This is how we also determine that artists are top notch and defined as the best.
In my professional opinion this is a joke, gimmick and insult to everything and everyone who has been involved in the scene for so many years for the music, the people and the feeling/connection that goes along with it.
It makes the rest of the real dj/producers who actually have talent, skills and have dedicated their time, effort and lives really jaded, frustrated and discouraged to say the least.
I can't see the "EDM phenomenon" last for much longer because it's few and far between that your seeing variety, progression and anything different coming to us from these "top artists" with the exception of a few.I don't want to come off ignorant or misinformed by any means. But as someone who has been involved as a dj ,promoter, supporter and pioneer for 15 years this is my expert opinion. The artists that are bringing new, different and top notch music and entertainment to the table don't have the same resources, funds and backing that a lot of the "TOP ARTISTS" do and if available to them we would see who would be the "BEST ARTISTS" in the world .
But until then boys and girl we live in a time where everything about this music scene is fake, fraudulent and distorted to benefit the corporations and people involved for fame, fortune and wealth. Knowledge is power and in this case ignorance is bliss.
So mad love and respect to all the dj/producers/pioneers out there who are keeping real and staying true to themselves and to the music. There are still some places/shows that stayed true and real and we get to experience a glimpse of how the scene use to be.
To the rest of you fake wannabe insta-artists and button pushers you can only fake it and fool the masses for so long because once there gone and there's no more money to be made, you'll be forgotten too.
